"Due to a recent illness Simon Phillips has been advised by his doctors not to tour for the rest of the year. He will be back for our 2004 shows in full force. Toto are pleased to announce that Ricky Lawson will be on the drums for the remaining Night of the Proms shows."

Hope that Simon is OK. He
could use a decent break.

Ricky is a great drummer.
He is solid as a rock and
as versatile.

This may be a bit of sacrilege, but...
while i think RL is a splendid drummer...
He does not have that zest, groove, & "garlic" that Simon has, sorry...just MO
Now, dont get me wrong, but; to me, when i hear him, he could be ANYBODY [or a machine]; guess that's why he plays w EVERYBODY...

RL or WK w the 'Jackets?...WK...
RL or SP/GB w Toto?...SP/GB...
RL or DC/PE/OH/SGadd/JKelt w the Dan?...DC/PE/OH/SG/JK ...
RL or Phil C w Phil C?...Phil C [or Chester ]
Da guy does work his butt off, tho, don't he [cause he's rock solid & "gives for the part"]

Jes' my 2....

I couldn't agree more, FUSE. Ricky with Steely Dan was some of the most bland drumming that I've heard. Rock solid, but bland. I just didnt feel the groove/personality.

Why wouldnt TOTO get Bissonette, or someone of his ilk to fill in?

I liked Ricky's work with the early Yellowjackets, like the Hornet, etc....

RL is cool....
I do agree with Fuse's statement about RL playing lacking "the garlic" in some situations....
I've seen the Steely video and a Genesis concert with RL....I liked his playing alot.Extremely tasteful. But Fagen/Becker should have released a video of the 90's stuff with PE,DC, and OH.....
But with Genesis I missed CT too much....

Ricky is great .....However in his defense, I will say that I have not heard the Yellowjackets stuff with him...Will Kennedy has always been my favorite drummer with the Jackets so I am a little bit biased....

They can pick anybody they
want and they picked Ricky.
It's for a reason.

Ricky can walk into any
situation and pick it up
FAST. That's likely what
this about besides possibly
availability.

I actually prefer his groove
to Simon's but I like what
I like. I understand there
are going to be Simon fans
that are disappointed. He's
a great player and neat to
watch. I hope he feels better.

No mention at Simon's site about illness specifics. I couldn't think of two more opposite drummers regarding the "garlic."
Simon has a lot of the spice in his playing--punchy. I saw Steely w/Ricky and agree...very bland. BUT...I feel this is one of those gigs where you have no say, like playing football for Bill Parcels. He is a total pro and most producers love the guy--very nice man. What I loved about Porcaro is his playing the "simple beat" with panache and personality. I could always tell its Jeff just the way he opened his hats...goes all the way back to "Hold the Line."
